Surface-mounted sockets

This category includes surface-mounted sockets, i.e. a special type of contacts that are completely installed on the wall. This type of equipment works well where, for some reason, cables cannot be routed under the plaster. The installation of surface-mounted sockets is, on the one hand, less invasive (it does not involve carrying out renovation works, as is the case with flush-mounted sockets), but on the other hand, you should know that this type of electrical installation plug points is less aesthetically pleasing and therefore not suitable for all rooms or objects.

Electrical sockets are the basis for the functioning of any electrical installation. Without them, it would be impossible to connect to the network many everyday equipment that is powered by electricity. Currently, there are many types of sockets on sale, which differ in various parameters. The basic division of this type of equipment is based on the place of assembly. This is how flush-mounted and surface-mounted contacts are distinguished. The former seem to be much more common. Surface-mounted copies, due to their specific construction, are rarely found in houses or apartments. These products are addressed to people who need to install sockets, e.g. in garages, on the terrace, in the gazebo, in the workshop, etc.

Characteristics of surface-mounted sockets

Surface-mounted sockets are placed entirely on the wall. Therefore, no element of the fittings is masked under the plaster surface. The construction is hidden only in a block made of plastic. This solution has its pros and cons. The great advantage of this type of equipment is the fact that it is easy to install. Surface-mounted sockets do not require forging walls, which significantly speeds up the installation process and does not expose the user to additional costs resulting from the need to carry out repairs. At the same time, the entire body of the equipment is visible to the naked eye. This solution is not very aesthetic and can significantly disfigure the interior. This is the biggest drawback of this type of contacts. For this reason, they are rarely suitable for installation at home. They are more often used in industrial rooms, workshops, where, due to their construction, they are also much more handy than flush-mounted units.

Types of surface-mounted sockets

Surface-mounted sockets can be divided into several subtypes. In this regard, the same classifications are made as for the flush-mounted models. When it comes to adapting the contact to the type of plug, the following sockets are distinguished:

  • type C (CEE 7/1) – the most classic, with two holes (for the phase and neutral wire) without a grounding pin. For this reason, it is used less and less. Very universal, but at the same time they do not have protection against insertion of type E and type F plugs, which prevents the use of protection in class I devices in the form of protective earth.
  • type E (CEE 7/5) – structurally almost identical to the previously described type C sockets. However, they are equipped with a special grounding pin. Common, among others in Poland, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Universal, do not support type F and round C plugs.
  • type F (CEE 7/3) – so-called sockets. A specific type of sockets, popular e.g. in Germany or the Netherlands, which shape resembles type C contacts, but at the same time they are equipped with a special type of grounding – small-sized elastic plates placed on the sides of the plug-in recess. They are suitable for plugs type C and F, europlug and a special type E/F called unischuko.
  • europe plug – a variety of type C sockets. They are distinguished by the flat shape of the plug recess, which means that they are intended only for rectangular plugs.

The above types refer to surface-mounted sockets in Poland. There are contacts of this type in the world adapted to other regional versions of plugs, e.g. British or American.

Surface-mounted sockets – protection classes

Another method of classifying surface-mounted sockets is based on their protection class. Here you can distinguish:

  • IP22 surface-mounted sockets – standard contacts intended for use in rooms where difficult conditions prevail;
  • IP44 surface-mounted sockets – so-called splash-proof sockets. Perfect for rooms with high humidity. They are also suitable for use wherever there is a high risk of water entering the plug-in recess. Usually equipped with a special protective flap;
  • IP56 surface-mounted sockets – specialized contacts intended for spaces with extremely difficult conditions, e.g. factories, steelworks, swimming pools, etc.

Surface-mounted sockets – what else is worth knowing about them?

Surface-mounted sockets can occur singly and collectively (double, triple versions, etc.). Special cans with this type of construction are available on the market. Due to the fact that this equipment is located entirely on the wall surface, even models with the lowest degree of protection are very hermetic. All this to thoroughly protect the inside of the contact and thus ensure the proper safety of the electrical connection. Surface-mounted sockets are most often equipped with special seals that limit the penetration of dust and dirt into the interior of the equipment.
