Smoke exhaust sensors

This category of products includes elements of alarm systems responsible for signaling smoke or carbon monoxide (carbon monoxide) escaping inside. It is easy to install devices that effectively increase the safety of household members. Commercially available detectors inform about the threat early enough, thanks to which there is a real possibility of eliminating it or at least safely evacuating the building.

In Poland, dozens of people lose their lives every year as a result of carbon monoxide poisoning. To this should be added at least several dozen victims of fires. Their number increases with the beginning of the heating season. Most often, the invitation to fire and the escape of carbon monoxide is caused by faulty domestic installations. A misfortune can be prevented or at least limited in size by using appropriate sensors that will alert the household members of the danger in time. Various types of smoke exhaust sensors are able to effectively increase the level of security in a house or apartment. At a low cost, in a very simple way, you can guarantee yourself additional protection, especially when, for example, a room is heated with an old stove.

How does a smoke detector work?

A smoke detector is a small device, mainly installed under the ceiling, which is used to detect and locate smoke, most often resulting from the appearance of a dangerous fire in the house. These devices are usually battery operated. Depending on the model, their operation may be based on one of the following methods:

  • optical sensors – use optical or laser light. A special transmitting diode sends beams of light which are received by the receiving diode. The detector reacts to the intersection or reflection of this beam by smoke entering the device.
  • semiconductor sensors – operate based on electronic detectors installed inside the device,
  • ionizing or isotopic sensors – use radioactive materials, i.e. such equipment consists of two ionization chambers with a small amount of radioactive substances. One of these chambers is sealed and relates to the indications from the other chamber, which is open to the external environment. It is to the latter that the smoke floating in the room can penetrate. If this happened, the radiation absorption would change in the chamber, and this is the basis for the device to signal a potential danger (mainly by comparing the output voltages between the open and closed chamber, e.g. comparator).

What to pay attention to when choosing a smoke detector?

Individual models of smoke detectors differ not only in the way they operate, but also in some parameters. It is worth taking them into account when choosing the perfect detector for yourself.

First of all, you should check what volume the device can cover. The larger the house or apartment we have, the wider the scope of work should be in terms of the serviced area of a given piece of equipment. It is not uncommon for more than one sensor to be purchased. Secondly, you should check the thermal resistance of the equipment, i.e. to what maximum temperature it can operate. If the detector is to be placed in the kitchen, it should be resistant to high values indicated by thermometers, e.g. up to 50 degrees Celsius.

In addition, it is worth paying attention to the humidity of the air. If for some reason the equipment will be exposed to this factor, you need to choose a model that is resistant to possible moisture.

There are also usability issues, such as the type of power supply. Of course, it is more convenient to connect the equipment to the power supply, but it is not always a possible solution, and often not very aesthetic due to protruding wires. At that time, you can opt for battery-powered smoke detectors. Some people make sure that the detector is loud and clear.

What is a carbon monoxide detector

Carbon monoxide (carbon monoxide) sensor is a similar device to a smoke detector, only that it informs about the escape of a chemical compound that is very dangerous for human life – carbon monoxide. Human beings cannot smell it on their own, because this gas has no smell. Absorbed into the bloodstream, it blocks the oxygen supply to the body, which in turn leads to many dangerous complications, and in extreme cases to death.

A suitable sensor, however, is able to quickly identify this dangerous gas in a house or apartment. All thanks to a specialized electrochemical cell. If carbon monoxide gets into it, a special reaction takes place in it, which (in very simple terms) triggers an alarm.

Types of carbon monoxide sensors

There are three basic types of carbon monoxide detectors:

  • standard – intended only for the detection of escaping carbon monoxide,
  • carbon monoxide and gas detectors – they also allow to inform about escaping carbon monoxide as well as gas (natural, propane and butane),
  • carbon monoxide and smoke detectors – inform about escaping carbon monoxide and possible smoke.

Smoke or carbon monoxide detector – what to choose?

It will be best, of course, to equip yourself with both of these devices, or possibly with a hybrid detector that allows you to detect both carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide from smoke. Carbon monoxide detectors are especially recommended in buildings equipped with fuel stoves, as well as gas cookers, gas water heaters, fireplaces, etc. Wherever this harmful compound may leak, it would be worth installing an appropriate detector.

A smoke detector will work in any home, regardless of the type of heating used. A fire can occur for various reasons, e.g. after a short circuit in the electrical installation.
