Sleeves and pins

A cable ferrule is a small element used to crimp multi-wire conductors. Thanks to the sleeve, several or several wires can be easily and effectively protected against mechanical damage, which may lead to a short circuit. This small element of the electrical installation is therefore very important for the convenience and safety of using the entire network.

Cable terminals and sleeves are elements whose purpose is to terminate or connect the wires of electric wires, which is why they are the basic elements of the work of every electrician, necessary for the assembly of cables and wires. This type of cable terminations is used where we are dealing with a copper cable braided from several wires. They prevent a single core from slipping out of the cable, and also allow the use of the full cross-section of the cable. Wire crimps also ensure a permanent connection.

Individual models of sleeves differ in size, because each fits into a different socket. However, generally speaking, these types of tips resemble a hollow cylinder in shape, which serves as a connection to various devices. In addition, ferrule cable terminals in various colors are available on the market, which makes it easier to connect the installation (the colors are to indicate to which hole a specific wire should be connected).

The el12.pl offer includes ferrules from reputable manufacturers (e.g. EM Group, Trytyt, Ergom, Hager, Haupa, Eaton, Radpol), designed for conductors with a cross-section from 0.5 sq mm to 400 sq mm In choosing a specific solution, a simple search engine will help, grouping products by price, manufacturer or cross-section.

The most popular types of sleeves

Two types of ferrule terminals are most often distinguished:

  1. insulated tips - the insulation used in the production of the tips provides additional protection, and the polyamide coating makes it possible to work in the temperature range from -40 °C to +125 °C. Insulating sleeves have different colors depending on the cross-section of the wire. It is worth remembering that high-quality workmanship and materials used in this process ensure that the sleeves are resistant to weather conditions, which is why it is important to choose products from proven suppliers.

The sleeve itself has a length of several to several millimeters and it is an element that must be clamped with the appropriate tools. On the other hand, the insulation is usually made of plastic, with the color and size of the ferrule terminal depending on its intended use. The general rule is that the insulation opening will be circular for single conductors and rectangular for double conductors.

  1. terminals without insulation - this type of assortment is most often copper and tin-plated. These are thin-walled terminals for multi-wire flexible cables, and it is worth noting that the shape of the sleeve facilitates the assembly of the cable core.

Sleeve terminals can also be divided according to the type of terminal and version of the terminal. One of the most popular solutions is the type TA, which has no insulation and is made of copper. The TA type can be used for wires with a core cross-section from 0.5 sq. mm to even 185 sq. mm. starts from just 0.14 sq mm

Due to the versions of the sleeve ends, we can distinguish:

  • lamellar tip,
  • sleeve end,
  • connection sleeve.

The offer of el12.pl in the category of SLEEVES AND PINS includes, among others: such elements as: bare ferrule, butt connector, aluminum butt connector, tin-plated copper butt connector, cable sleeve, connecting pins, spacer sleeve, connecting sleeve for fiber, round sleeve for compressed conductors, cable terminal, connector sleeve , reducing aluminum cable connector, aluminum-copper cable connector with a sealed partition, flat oval connector for overhead lines, start/end sleeve.

The copper cable connectors tubular available in the el12.pl assortment are used for butt-joining wires of the same cross-section. The use of pipe connectors increases the safety of the connection and its durability. It is important to remember that this type of connection cannot be mechanically loaded.

When choosing a specific model, it is worth bearing in mind that there are copper pipe fittings available on the market that are subjected to additional processing in the form of hardening and firing at 700°C. This process removes all impurities from the material from which the fitting is made. As a result, hardened fittings (as opposed to non-hardened ones) are less likely to develop cracks and micro-cracks during pressing, and thus have better operating parameters. In each case, the effectiveness of crimping (fixing the connector on the cable) depends on the use of an appropriate tool and a die adapted to the cross-section.

Convenient sets of sleeves

For people who often use various types of ferrules and terminals at work, a convenient solution may be a set of ferrules with a press in a special container (4100 insulated ferrule terminals) available at el12.pl. The set includes: a plastic box, a handy insert for the assortment, an additional foam insert, a crimper for ferrules, automatic 0.08 – 10 mm square and ferrules (red, grey, black, blue, yellow and TWIN ferrules).

Various types of sleeves arranged in a handy box are easier to store, and thanks to the good organization of the container space, it is easier and faster to select a specific element. This is especially important from a practical point of view, considering the small size of the sleeves.

When work requires the assembly (or disassembly) of sleeves and other cable lugs, special presses with various types of elements may be useful, used to push and push pins and sleeves into sockets. The work will also be facilitated by folding or fixed assembly knives (the blades of assembly knives usually have cuts to facilitate stripping the insulation of wires and an additional, auxiliary, thin blade), insulation strippers (devices that may look like a peeler; they will prove useful when removing insulation from standard round cable) or special pliers.
