Photovoltaics

This category of products contains the elements necessary to create a properly functioning photovoltaic installation. This is a solution that has become extremely popular in Poland in recent years, mainly due to the fact that it is economical and ecological. Characteristic panels most often mounted on the roofs of buildings can be a solution to the problem of drastically more expensive electricity.

In the colloquial sense, photovoltaic is a special installation used to convert solar radiation into electricity. In fact, this term means a separate field of science dealing with the generation of electricity from the light that the sun provides us with. This process occurs due to the occurrence of the photovoltaic phenomenon, i.e. the creation of an electromotive force in a solid body under the influence of light radiation. The development of photovoltaics has been extremely dynamic in recent years, mainly due to the increasingly common use of photovoltaic cells to produce electricity in households or even to power street lamps.

What does a standard photovoltaic installation consist of?

A photovoltaic installation consists of three basic elements:

  • panels (photovoltaic or solar),
  • double counter
  • and the inverter.

The most characteristic is, of course, the first of the listed components. The panels are basically a showcase of this technology and decorate an increasing number of Polish households. It is in them that the cells are located, which enable the occurrence of the already described photovoltaic phenomenon.

The panels are designed to focus the sun's rays and initiate the process of converting them into valuable electricity. The meter, in turn, measures the flow of electricity and enables the settlement of self-produced energy, as well as its comparison with the values of energy taken from the supplier.

Panels equipped with cells produce direct current. In order for it to be useful for the household, it must be turned into a variable. The inverters are responsible for this.

How does photovoltaics work?

The operation of a photovoltaic installation is relatively simple. First, sunlight must fall on the panels, which are installed by a specialized company. It is important to arrange this element correctly so that it can effectively focus the sun's rays on itself. The equipment contains special cells that can be made of two types of silicon: monocrystalline or polycrystalline. The former has a very orderly internal structure, which ensures very high efficiency. It is much more reliable, more efficient and more efficient than polycrystalline silicon.

The photovoltaic phenomenon takes place in silicon cells – the solar energy is converted to direct current and the inverter converts it to alternating current. Then it flows directly to the home installation, providing power to e.g. sockets.

If an installation produces too much energy, it flows into the electricity grid. At that time, pro-units, i.e. people who have their own photovoltaic installation, can use 70-80 percent of these resources. If, however, the installed photovoltaics produced too little energy to be enough for the entire farm, electricity is taken from the grid from the supplier.

Advantages of photovoltaics

The photovoltaic system installed at home gives many benefits. First of all, this solution is actually able to reduce electricity bills. Yes, the installation of panels itself is not the cheapest investment (although prices have managed to drop quite significantly compared to the times when this type of technology was just entering the Polish market), but in the long run it means purchasing electricity from suppliers for much less money.

Importantly, especially nowadays, facilities equipped with photovoltaic installations are much more independent and less susceptible to sudden energy price spikes. The panels are durable and should serve for at least several years. Photovoltaic is also easy to use, as it does not require control of any specialized devices. The entire process of generating electricity on your own is essentially self-contained.

It is also worth mentioning about ecological issues – photovoltaics has a beneficial effect on the environment because it does not use coal combustion or any other elements to generate electricity. Therefore, no harmful substances are released into the atmosphere. In addition, the technology uses the sun - one of the few renewable energy sources.

Photovoltaics and atmospheric changes

Those who do not yet use photovoltaic panels often wonder how they withstand sudden changes in weather conditions. Their resistance to heavy hail seems to be particularly questionable. In general, the panels are made of tempered glass surrounded by an aluminum frame. As a standard, they should survive a storm of even 25-millimeter hailstones without major obstacles. A lot also depends on the method of assembly or possible damage during transport or even the production of the equipment. However, atmospheric conditions should not cause rapid destruction of the product. It is estimated that the efficiency of panels in the first 10 years of operation decreases by about 20 percent.

What's important – the panels also work when the sky is cloudy. In this case, however, naturally less energy is produced than on full sunny days.
