spark gaps

We install spark gaps mainly on insulators where we want to cause flashovers to protect the apparatus against overvoltage. When the voltage reaches a value greater than the strength of the air gap of the spark gap, a flashover occurs, an arc is formed and the charge is discharged to the ground. The disadvantage of a spark gap is that any overvoltage causing ignition causes a short to ground and an interruption in the power supply.
