Inverters

This category of products includes inverters, i.e. specialized electrical devices that change the DC (direct current) they are supplied with into AC ( alternating current) with adjustable output frequency and voltage. Professionally, they are called DC/AC power converters. This type of equipment is commonly used in broadly understood automation and industry. Inverters are primarily installed in electric motors.

Inverters – naming problem

The term “inverter”, although commonly used, is a colloquial term. Devices of this type are professionally called DC/AC power converters. Many people equate inverters with frequency converters. This phenomenon is so common that even some manufacturers have started to use all of the above terms interchangeably. However, it is worth knowing that, in fact, inverters and converters are completely different devices. The first mentioned equipment is used to convert direct current into alternating current with adjustable frequency. In turn, converters are used to change the voltage and frequency of alternating current, which affects the rotational speed and torque in an induction motor.

Scheme of operation of inverters in practice

Inverters are primarily installed in electric motors. They usually require electricity with a frequency of 50 Hz to run them. Each mechanism of this kind works at a certain number of revolutions per minute. This value depends on many factors, such as the construction of the engine or its power. The inverter allows you to change the operating parameters of the machine so that it works with precisely defined parameters. Attachments give you more control over how your engine functions. By affecting the frequency of the current, you can reduce or increase the rotational speed of the mechanism.

Inverter types

In the past, thyristor inverters were commonly used. Currently, the market is dominated by devices controlled by advanced signal processors, which makes the control over the parameters of the working engine even more precise. Modern DC/AC power converters are built using IGBT transistors or, less frequently, in the case of lower supply voltage, field effect transistors.

There are several classifications of inverters. The basic division is based on the power sources of the accessories. In this way, voltage inverters (powered from a voltage source, equipped with a capacitor or a large-capacity battery) and current inverters (powered by a current source, equipped with a so-called choke) are distinguished.

Inverters are also divided by the control method. Here, scalar and vector models can be distinguished. The former are used in variable torque drive systems and are very economical. They work in such a way that they provide the motor with the minimum possible energy, so as not to additionally reduce the output frequency below the set value.

Vector controlled inverters are used in constant torque drive systems. These attachments feature optimum torque control according to the requirements of the machine and its application. This is a more advanced type of inverters, allowing for more precise control over the engine speed and the so-called torque. Importantly, this can be achieved without the need for encoder feedback on the motor shaft.

Inverters are also divided by power supply. There are single-phase and three-phase models on the market.

How to choose the right inverter?

In order for the inverter to fulfill its function, it should be properly selected for the given motor. First of all, read all the technical data from the nameplate of the mechanism – supply voltage, power, connection type, speed, etc. Next, it will be necessary to determine the type of load and adjust the input, output, communication method and dimensions of the inverter. Only then is it possible to choose the right accessories.

Application of inverters

Inverters are primarily installed in electric motors. However, their application is much wider. In industry, it is currently the simplest and most effective way to regulate the speed of various types of mechanisms equipped with various motors. Inverters are also found in household appliances that are used in most households every day. An example are washing machines, where the accessories are responsible for regulating the rotational speed.

What are independent inverters?

This is a special type of converter that transfers electricity from the DC circuit to an autonomous AC receiver. When we say "autonomous", we mean that it should not be connected to a power line with a fixed frequency. Such inverters automatically determine the AC voltage and frequency, which makes them capable of assuming the function of a grid generator.

Pros and cons of inverters

The unquestionable advantage of inverters is their efficiency. This is currently the best way to regulate individual parameters in the operation of motor devices. Transducers are also quite widely available, and the division into different types allows you to better choose the type of equipment for individual needs.

The disadvantage, however, is that the average customer may have problems with the correct matching of the inverter. The construction of the accessories is quite complicated and the choice itself, not to mention the assembly, requires specialist knowledge. Inverters are also not the cheapest products used in the field of industrial automation.
