Electrical boxes

This category includes electrical boxes, i.e. installation accessories, which are primarily used to protect wire connections and facilitate the assembly of other elements that make up the entire electrical network in a given facility. Boxes are a fundamental part of almost every electrical installation. They have been commonly used for decades, although over the years they have been modernized and adapted to modern arrangement solutions.

What is an electrical box?

Electrical box, commonly referred to as electrical, is a casing made of plastic (usually polypropylene), equipped with a characteristic, self-locking lid. It is placed on a selected plane, usually a wall, in order to hide and protect the connections of the wires. The box is installed in strategic points for a given room – on the one hand, these accessories are mounted where it is necessary to create a secure connection of wires, and on the other – for this purpose, those fragments of the plane are selected that are not immediately conspicuous and do not negatively affect the interior design.

The electrical box is a small-sized accessory. There are models of various sizes on sale, but the most classic variant is in the form of a round casing with a diameter of about 60 millimeters.

Main functions of the electrical box

Electrical boxes are installed for several reasons. First of all, they are to protect the wires, and specifically the connections between them, against defects resulting from the adverse effects of various external factors or simply against mechanical damage. As a result, the boxes increase the safety of the entire installation and reduce the risk of dangerous short circuits, which in extreme cases may even lead to a fire. The covers of this type also indicate where the wires are connected. In the case of renovations or repairs, it is easier to find out where the cables have been joined together. The aesthetic function of electrical boxes cannot be forgotten. They effectively mask wires, which without the use of this type of equipment would simply hang freely on the wall and disfigure the interior.

Types of electrical boxes

There are several types of electrical boxes. Their basic classification is based on the method of assembly. This is how surface-mounted boxes, flush-mounted boxes and floor boxes are distinguished.

The first type, as its name suggests, is placed on the plaster on the wall. So they are visible, which makes them not suitable for use in every room. They are usually used in industrial and commercial spaces, where the aesthetics of masking cable connections is of secondary importance. Surface-mounted boxes are used not only to cover wires, but also to protect sensors and relays. Most often they are mounted with screws or dowels. Surface-mounted electrical boxes are usually square or rectangular.

Concealed models are mounted in the wall. So it is a much more aesthetic solution, because the equipment is thoroughly masked. This type of boxes is used primarily in houses and apartments, where it is particularly important that the wire connections are invisible. Flush-mounted copies can have a different shape, although they are most often in the form of a round casing. It is possible to select the appropriate model of the box for any type of wall, starting from masonry structures, ending with cardboard and plaster.

The third type are floor electrical boxes. From a technical point of view, they do not differ much from surface-mounted and flush-mounted models. These items are designed in such a way that they are suitable for installation in the floor. This solution is most often used in office spaces.

There are also other, less common types of electrical boxes. These elements usually take the form of casings made of plastic. However, there are metal models on the market, used for installation outside the building. They are mainly made of aluminum and are usually suitable for surface mounting.

It is also worth mentioning the so-called electrical boxes with a pocket. This is a special type of cable sheath, equipped with a module for electrical and electronic devices (e.g. power supplies or controllers).

Advantages and disadvantages of electrical boxes

An unquestionable advantage of electrical boxes is the ease of masking cable connections. Installation of this type of equipment does not require professional knowledge. Placing in the cable sheath and then placing it in the desired place is extremely simple and can be done within a few minutes. It is also a proven solution and has been used for many years. The cables are effectively protected in the box, which significantly improves the safety of the entire electrical installation. The price of the cans is also an advantage. Standard models cost just over five zlotys. Specialist units adapted to use in more demanding conditions may be more expensive.

When it comes to the shortcomings of electrical boxes, they become apparent mainly at the time of failure. In the case of flush-mounted models, in order to get inside the casing, it is necessary to remove the finishing elements. In addition, traditional cans do not always work with solutions typical of modern smart homes.
