This category of products available in our store includes drills and discs for various types of power tools. These products are used for professional processing of the selected material. Of course, drills are primarily used to make holes. They are mounted primarily in drilling machines or other machine tools with a rotary drive. The drill set in motion drills into a given plane and makes a hole of a certain size. In turn, discs are used to cut or grind a given material. These are special discs usually mounted on grinders or saws. The equipment set in motion, depending on the type of disc, enables the separation of the selected material or smoothing it and preparing it for further repair work.
There are several types of drill bits available in the market. They differ from each other primarily in construction. Generally, this equipment is divided into two parts: working and gripping. The first one is the part from the drill face to the end of the flute (to put it simply, to the part where the uneven surface of the product ends, directly responsible for making holes). The grip part, as the name suggests, is used to attach it to the selected power tool. It is nothing more than a drill shank, which is to ensure a stable position of the equipment during work.
The most common type is twist drills. The construction of this type of attachment has not changed for over 150 years. Their working part consists of two cutting blades arranged in a helix. In the same way, special grooves have been placed, the task of which is to effectively remove the chips created during drilling.
Another common type of drill bits are flat drill bits, often also referred to as feather bits. Their working part is definitely shorter than in the case of the twist drills described above. In addition, they are distinguished by a characteristic, flat crown. This one consists of two straight drills, devoid of any grooves. Feather drill bits are used to make holes up to 45 millimeters in diameter.
There are also twist drill bits. The working part is made of a specially designed coil with chip removal grooves and a small blade at the end. This type of attachment is used to make larger and deeper holes. It is worth paying attention to the gripping part of twist drills, because usually the base of the shaft is a characteristic hexagonal base. This design provides better stability during machining.
For more advanced work, core drills (so-called hole saws or trephine drills) are used. In addition to the hole-making pin itself, they are equipped with a special perimeter with blades. This product is suitable for punching.
The drill should be selected based on the material in which the hole is planned to be made. Individual types of accessories are made of various metal alloys, thanks to which they drill through a given type of material more efficiently and wear out more slowly. The most distinguished are drills for wood, metal, concrete, sheet metal and the increasingly popular universal drills. When choosing a particular type, it is also good to pay attention to the type of handle. Various power tools are adapted to specific types of fastenings, and these, apart from the classic cylindrical or hexagonal base, can be distinguished at least a few, e.g. a quarter-inch shank typical for screwdrivers or a conical shank.
Shields, in turn, are tools resembling discs, which, depending on their purpose, have a slightly different structure. Cutting discs and grinding discs stand out in particular. The first of them are used to work mainly in a vertical orientation. Their edges are covered with blades whose task is to efficiently cut through the selected material. Saw blades are used for working with wood, metal, stone or plastic. It is important to choose the right model for the type of work. In the case of cutting discs, the key parameters relate to the blades, sometimes called teeth. Their number, construction or even the density of distribution around the perimeter affects the efficiency of work. The principle is simple – discs with fewer teeth are suitable for simpler machining, mainly in softer materials.
It is worth mentioning diamond blades, which are becoming more and more popular among professionals. These are extremely sharp cutting discs, the body of which is made of steel or soft metal alloys. The edges, on the other hand, were covered with a special synthetic diamond powder embedded in a metal binder. This mix makes the blades cut through the material more easily and less likely to chip.
The construction of grinding wheels is a bit different. Here, the ends of the disc are not important, but the construction of the surface. Generally, grinding wheels, as this type of equipment is commonly called, consist of abrasive grains and a carrier – binders. The first element seems to be more important, because the roughness of the disc and its effectiveness depend on the size of the grains. The binders are the backbone of the equipment. In this respect, ceramic, rubber, mineral and bakelite models are distinguished.
Dials are also divided by shape. In this way, it is possible to specify classic disc wheels (used for basic grinding works), cup wheels (with convex and interrupted rings on the surface, used mainly for complex construction works, e.g. abrasion of worn concrete surface), or pin wheels ( made of non-woven fabric, installed on micro-tools for very precise machining).
Lamella (flap) discs are very popular. They are cheap, widely available and with their help you can quickly and easily process most popular materials.
When selecting discs, it is worth paying attention not only to their intended use, but also to technical parameters (e.g. diameter of the mounting hole or maximum rotational speed). These should correspond to the capabilities of the power tool on which the disk will be finally mounted.
