dimmers

This category of products includes dimmers, i.e. electrical equipment used to regulate the intensity of light in a selected room. Products of this type are currently experiencing a real renaissance of their popularity. Forgotten for years, they are currently coming back into favor, mainly due to the possibility of adjusting the intensity of light to current needs or to complement the interior design. Economic issues are also important – dimmers reduce energy consumption, and thus help to reduce electricity bills.

Although light dimmers are mainly associated with modern buildings, they are not really an invention of recent years. Early devices with a similar effect were constructed as early as the late 19th century. Light dimmers came into widespread use in the United States in the 1960s. Of course, they were not as technologically advanced as modern dimmers, but they were relatively popular. In Poland, they were also installed, but mainly in the richest houses. That is why many people associated this equipment with unnecessary luxury. Today, the perception of dimmers has changed significantly. They are installed in more and more buildings, and the group of satisfied users of light regulators is constantly growing.

What exactly are dimmers?

A dimmer is actually a simple transformer that allows you to adjust the light intensity from 0 to 100 percent of the total lighting power. The operation of the equipment is based on changing the input voltage of the light. Traditional models work with circuits connected to the voltage of 230 V. More modern electronic regulators are also able to work effectively with lighting connected to 12 V. Dimmers are most often mounted on the wall surface. The adjustment is done by manipulating the knob, slider or sensor (depending on the model of the equipment).

Types of dimmers

Individual types of dimmers differ in the way they are controlled. The basic type are regulators with cables that allow you to change the intensity of light using the already mentioned rotary, touch or slide panels. These are the most common dimmers that operate as completely autonomous devices.

In addition to them, there are also infrared-controlled regulators. In their case, the change in light intensity is possible thanks to a transmitter associated with one or more receivers permanently mounted in the walls of the building.

An alternative to the above solutions are radio-controlled dimmers. In their case, it is possible to control each receiver with several transmitters and vice versa – each transmitter is able to control any receiver in the building. The system made of radio dimmers allows you to change the intensity of light through the walls.

There are also modern regulators adapted to work with the so-called intelligent buildings. In the switchgear there is a central unit to which individual building systems are connected, including lighting regulators. In this case, the light intensity changes almost automatically, and the equipment itself can also be used to regulate heating, air conditioning or blinds mounted in the windows.

Are dimmers suitable for all bulbs?

Theoretically, dimmers are able to work with any type of light. In practice, remember to check whether the type of equipment will be able to work with the bulbs installed in the house. The regulators work seamlessly with ordinary lamps and halogen lamps. Complications arise in the case of fluorescent and LED lamps. For them, you should buy special, dedicated dimmer models.

When considering the purchase, it is also worth paying attention to the scope of the product's operation. If its wattage range is different from that of the supported bulb, it is very likely that the light will flicker.

Advantages of dimmers

Light dimmers reduce the energy consumption of light bulbs, which actually translates into lower electricity bills. However, it must be remembered that when adjusting the light intensity, losses occur in the transformer – electricity turns into heat, so reducing the lamp power by, for example, 50 percent does not mean that the power consumption will decrease by the same amount. The value of the latter will be reduced by about 20-25 percent.

Another advantage of this type of attachment is the convenience of use. Dimmers allow you to set the light of any intensity, adapted to current needs. Thanks to them, lighting can be not only more useful, but can also play a greater role as a decorative element of the room.

Dimmers also increase the comfort of using the house. Less intense light is appreciated, for example, when watching TV after dark or, for example, when entering a specific room right after waking up. In both cases, the light is not distracting or irritating, provided that it is properly adjusted.

Not without significance is the fact that it is now possible to select dimmers for virtually any type of lighting. The hardware itself is produced in so many variants that you can easily find models with such patterns or colors that perfectly match even the most carefully designed interior.

It is also worth mentioning that dimmers are increasingly used not only to control light, but also other home systems. So it is an accessory with universal application.
