Roof fans

This category of products includes roof fans, i.e. accessories that are an essential element of any properly functioning ventilation system. Mounted on the roofs of buildings, they are used both in the case of mechanical solutions and traditional gravitational ventilation. Appropriate selection of a roof fan affects the efficiency of air exchange in the building and thus determines the comfort of use of individual rooms.

Roof fans are devices used to transport air in specific directions. Installed on the roof of the building, it allows circulation – replacement of ”used” fresh air. This is done by increasing the pressure. The difference between the conditions inside and outside the building means that the air is sucked out of the rooms and at the same time replaced with new, unpolluted, containing more oxygen.

The fan is not only a channel for the escape and entry of air into the facility. The equipment gives circulation speed and determines its direction. The energy needed for this is generated by the installed rotor, which is additionally driven by an electric motor.

Why is effective ventilation important?

Effective ventilation of rooms has a huge impact on our health and the overall technical condition of the building. Constant air exchange leads to the removal of various impurities from the inside of the facility. In poorly ventilated spaces, residents or users may complain of malaise, headache, burning eyes, difficulty concentrating, etc. Inadequate circulation favors the appearance of moisture and fungus in the house, which in turn is a fertile ground for allergies and allergies. The appearance of mold also has a detrimental effect on the structure of the building itself.

Where are roof fans used?

Roof fans are installed on residential buildings, outbuildings, office buildings, factories, etc. It is particularly important that such vents are located in places where air pollution can be extremely high (e.g. boiler rooms).

These devices are primarily typical of mechanical ventilation solutions. More and more often, however, they are installed as additional vents supporting gravity ventilation. They create the so-called hybrid system. The fan starts in situations of increased demand for fresh air (e.g. when there are more people in the room or when there is a lot of pollution).

Types of roof fans

The roof fan can have various forms. The basic classification is based on the method of assembly. In this respect, roof, conical and chimney models are distinguished. The first of them are adapted primarily for installation on sloping roofs. Conical models are suitable for mounting on flat roofing and on walls, and chimney models are directly related to the chimney and support, among others, absorbing excessively produced smoke.

Another division of roof fans is based on the direction of the transported air. In this way, models with a horizontal and vertical outlet are distinguished. The former can only be used in installations where there is no risk of mixing the exhausted air with the air forced into the building. On the other hand, products with a vertical outlet throw the air several meters up, so that it can be transported, for example, with the wind. For this reason, this solution is used only in facilities that are sufficiently distant from the buildings adjacent to them.

Individual fans have the ability to force air at different pressures. Axial units are constructed in such a way that the gas flowing through the impeller does not change its direction. For this reason, it is a type of equipment designed to transport low-pressure air, primarily in general ventilation. The opposite of this solution are centrifugal fans. They have special blades that spread the pressed air to the sides (thus they can work even under the influence of gas under high pressure). Models of this type are used wherever high static pressure and high volumetric efficiency are required. They work great as local ventilation.

What to pay attention to when choosing a roof fan?

Choosing the right roof fan can determine the efficiency of the entire system responsible for air exchange in the building. It is therefore worth knowing what elements to pay attention to when browsing the offers of individual models.

First of all, you need to narrow down the search area to accessories adapted to installation on a given type of roof structure.

Then it is necessary to pay attention to the air discharge – the fan should operate in such a way that the discharged gas does not re-enter the building and does not fall into the surrounding objects. So much depends on the individual development conditions.

An important parameter is the power of the device. It largely determines the performance. The higher it is, the faster and more efficient the exchange of air in the room will take place.

The level of generated noise is also important. If we want the equipment to work unnoticed, the loudness of the mechanism, especially the motor and rotor, should be verified. In the case of the latter, it is good to check the material of manufacture. Pieces made of stainless, light metals, resistant to weather conditions, are more solid.

To make the installation of the equipment as simple as possible, it is also good to pay attention to the way the fan is powered and, if necessary, to ensure its trouble-free connection to the electrical outlet. It is also recommended to pay attention to the maximum temperature of the transported medium (this is especially important in the case of fans installed in factories or production halls, where the air sucked in and extracted can often be very hot).
